Lypo-C Enoshima Week: Sailors Aiming for the World Stage Clash at Enoshima

— Reception a Resounding Success, over 600 Sailors Deepen Bonds —

"Enoshima Week 2026," currently underway at the Enoshima Yacht Harbor, entered its third day, with racing kicking off today across all 11 classes. Fierce battles unfolded across a wide range of categories, from the Optimist class competed in by the junior generation, to the Snipe class highly popular among university and adult sailors, the high-speed skiff 49er and 49erFX classes, as well as the 29er, 420, and iQFOiL classes, which double as the selection trials for the Asian Games Youth representatives.

Among them, the 470 class, which drew the largest number of entries, features numerous teams aiming to qualify for the World Championships to be held at Enoshima Yacht Harbor this summer. Since competing in the World Championships requires a mixed-gender pair, this year's regatta is characterized by many newly formed duos gearing up for the global stage.

Yuki Honda and Ryo Tsuchiya spoke about the unique challenges faced by mixed-gender duos: "With mixed pairs, the combined weight inevitably tends to be lighter, which becomes a disadvantage in strong winds. We struggled quite a bit with the heavy air yesterday and today. Tomorrow's forecast calls for lighter winds, so we hope to do our best to secure a spot for the World Championships."

Meanwhile, Taishi Goto and Takuto Takamura, who have just transitioned from the 29er to the 49er class, also appeared to struggle with the heavy air conditions. Crew member Takamura reflected, "There are few teams actively sailing the 49er in Japan, so we usually practice on our own. When it comes to racing, there are so many boats around us, which might have made us a bit flustered." Skipper Goto discussed their future challenges: "Ironically, it's easier to drive the boat in winds like today where both of us are fully hiking out. In light air, it's still difficult to maintain the boat's balance, and we don't feel confident enough yet to control it well and catch up to the top boats. Moving forward, we want to increase joint practice sessions with other teams to get used to sailing in a multi-boat environment while honing our techniques."

The class that remained racing until the very end of the day was the Snipe class, boasting 99 entries. Although the Snipe is not an Olympic discipline, it remains a highly popular class supported by a wide generation of sailors, from university students to adults. One of the competing sailors smiled as they shared the class's appeal: "That hiking out simply becomes addictive."

A reception was held after the races, where the participants deepened their camaraderie while enjoying dishes made with local ingredients, local cider, local craft beer, and regional confectioneries. The venue bustled with energy late into the evening, featuring a performance by the Soshu Shindo Taiko drummers and a raffle with premium prizes.

Tomorrow, May 24th, will finally mark the final day of the regatta. The forecast predicts the wind will die down, promising a change in dynamics from the heavy air conditions seen so far.

Lypo-C 江の島ウィーク　6海面で世界を目指すセーラーたちが激突

― レセプションも盛況、600人超の選手たちが交流を深める ―

江の島ヨットハーバーで開催中の「江の島ウィーク2026」は大会3日目を迎え、本日から全6海面を用いて11種目のレースが展開されました。

ジュニア世代が競うオプティミスト級から、学生・社会人セーラーに人気の高いスナイプ級、高速スキフ種目の49er級、49erFX級、さらにはアジア大会ユース代表選考を兼ねる29er級、420級、iQFOiL級まで、それぞれのカテゴリーで熱戦が繰り広げられました。

中でも最大参加艇数となった470級は、今夏に江の島ヨットハーバーで開催される世界選手権の出場権獲得を目指すチームが多数出場しています。世界選手権には男女混合ペアでの出場が条件となるため、世界大会に向け新しくチームを組んだペアが多いのも今大会の特徴です。

470ワールドを目指す本多 佑基／土屋 涼組は「男女ペアの場合、どうしても合計体重が軽くなることが多く、強風ではそれがディスアドバンテージになります。私たちも昨日、今日の強風にはかなり苦労しました。明日は風が落ちる予報なので、世界大会の出場権を獲得できるよう頑張りたいです」と男女ペアならではの難しさについて話しました。

一方、29er級から49er級へ転向したばかりの後藤 大志／高村 拓豊組も、強風コンディションに苦戦した様子でした。クルーの高村は「49erは日本国内で活動しているチームが少なく、普段は自分たちだけで練習することが多いです。レースになると周りに艇がたくさんいるので、そういうところで少しテンパってしまった部分があるのかもしれません」と振り返りました。また、スキッパーの後藤は「どちらかと言えば、今日のように2人ともフルハイクで出るような風の方が走らせやすいです。軽風だとまだ艇のバランスを取るのが難しく、上手くコントロールして上位に追いつく自信がありません。今後は他チームとの合同練習などを増やし、複数艇の環境に慣れながらテクニックも磨いていきたいです」と今後への課題を語りました。

この日、最後までレースが行われていたのは、99艇がエントリーしたスナイプ級でした。スナイプ級はオリンピック種目ではありませんが、学生から社会人まで幅広い世代に支持されている人気クラスです。参加選手の一人は、その魅力について「あのハイクアウトがクセになるんですよね」と笑顔で話していました。

レース後にはレセプションも開催され、選手たちは地元の食材を使った料理や地サイダー、地ビール、地元銘菓などを楽しみながら交流を深めました。会場では相州神童太鼓の演奏や豪華景品が当たる抽選会も行われ、夜遅くまで賑わいを見せました。

明日はいよいよ最終日を迎えます。予報では風が落ち着く見込みで、ここまでの中～強風コンディションとは異なる展開が予想されます。
